Cool Under Pressure 6 of 10

Cool under pressure

6 of 10

Very few students enjoy taking test. Yet functioning well under pressure is crucial to your future success. Try thinking of the pressure of testing as practice for the work world’s own explosive situation. You could someday find yourself meeting tight deadlines, speaking with irate customers, welding a scalpel or handing dangerous chemicals.

The best way to curtail pressure to even eliminate it is to prepare. Apply the motto “Be prepared” holds true first time and every time. Prepare for that test, and you won’t worry about it. In fact, it will be your chance to shine, to reveal the hard work you have put into preparing for the test. You will be rewarded for the effort you have thrust into your studies. Preparation removes fear. When you are prepared, you will not fear. Preparation helps you maintain your cool under pressure. Preparation generates energy and enthusiasm; therefore prepare and coolness under pressure is sure to abound.

“Gold medals don’t make champions…. Hard work does.”

ANON

Reflection: I think this quote means just because you get a gold medal doesn’t mean that you are a champion it just means that you were able to do something some couldn’t do. But by hard work you are a champion because you could feel it.

Take Control of Homework Part 3

Take control of homework

Part 3

Take advantages of any free time

If you have long study periods or long bus ride, use the time to review notes, prepare for an upcoming class or start your homework. Flash cards are a great learning tool. They are easy to make, easy to handle and are a marvelous tool to help you learn and remember anything. Punch a hole in the upper left corner of each index card and connect the stack of your flash cards with a ring. Then the cards are bound and not flopping around.   Flash cards bound like this act like a small book with pages you can even have a separate ringed stack for each subject. WHATEVER YOU WANT TO REMEMBER, PUT IT ON A CARD.

Study with a friend

Get together with friends and classmates to quiz each other, compare notes and predict test questions. Consider joying a study group.

Communicate

If you have con concerns about the amount or type of homework you have you might want to talk to your family, teachers or counselors. They can help you understand how much time you need to allot for homework and how to manage your task.

Celebrate your achievement

Reward yourself for hitting milestones or doing something well.

Take Control of Homework Part 2

Take control of homework

Part 2

Keeping things in perspective

Know how much weight each assignment or test carries, and use your time accordingly. Don’t waste time, but be wise and smart. Doing the most important thing first is being wise and smart.

Get more involved

Keep your mind from wondering by taking notes, underlining sections, discussing topics with others or relating your homework to something you’re studying in another class. Learn actively and not passively. Be anxiously engaged in your studies and you will have a great experience. Dominate a good attitude toward home assignments, and you will begin to love doing it.

Organize the information

People process information in different ways. Some people like to draw pictures or charts to digest information, others prefer to read out loud or make detailed outlines. Try to find the methods that work best for you. Ask your teacher for recommendations if you’re having trouble.

Take Control of Homework Part 1

Take control of homework

Part 1

Although very few students love homework, it does serve a purpose. Homework helps you:

·       Reinforce what you’ve learned during the day.

·       Build study habits that are essential in college.

·       Prepare for your classes.

·       Get a sense of progress.

Here are some tips to help you deal with homework more efficiently and effectively.

Set the method

Create a good study area with everything you need (for example, a calculator). If you don’t have a quiet place at home, try your school or local library.

Know where to begin

Make a list of everything you need to do, and note all deadlines. Do the more difficult assignments first, so you don’t   have to face them at the end.

Study at the same time every day

Even If you don’t have homework every night, use the time to review notes. If sitting down to work is your normal routine, you’ll approach it with less dread. Also, you’ll become a pro at using time productively.

Note-Taking Strategies Part 4

Note-Taking Strategies

Part 4

For review

Once you’ve done all of the above, you’ll find you’ve created your own personalized study guide. Cover the main section of the page and use the keys words and questions in the left margin as a quiz.

Stick to it

Review your notes the day you take them and all your notes once a week. That way, you won’t need to study as much as when its test time.

You’ve been doing all the work alone

Try out the cornel system, but if it doesn’t work out for you, experiment with other methods. Ask your class mate how they take notes or ask a teacher for advice. Taking god notes requires practice, like any other skill. And the more you work at it now, the more prepared you’ll be to take notes in college.

Distance Education: Is a Virtual Classroom for You Part 2

Distance Education: Is a Virtual Classroom for You

Part 2

Positive aspects of distance education

·       Independence and time management: taking courses online lets you hone your ability to work on your own. You also gain experience in managing your time efficiently.

·       A flexible schedule: school can only provide a certain number of class periods in a single school day, and there may not be enough time for you to take everything you want. Because distance education lets you take classes outside regular school hours, it gives you the flexibility to explore all your areas of interest.

·       Advanced and specialized classes: some school can’t provide advanced and specialized classes. Distance education gives you the chance to gain experience in areas that would otherwise remain out of reach.

Blanciing High School and Part-Time Work Part 5

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work

Part 5

Additional Tips

Although working and going to school is challenging, it can be a rewarding experience if you use some foresight. These tips can help you handle the situation and make the most of your time:

·       Discuss your plans with your family. Balancing the demands of school and work is easier with their support.

·       Start slowly; don’t commit to working a lot of hours immediately.

·       Avoid time conflicts by planning your class and work schedules as far ahead of time as possible.

·       Use your time efficiently.  You use 10 minutes waiting in a line to go over a few pages of assigned reading. If your job has a lot of down time and your boss has no objection, you can use slow periods to do schoolwork.

·       If you commute to your job on public transportation, bring your schoolwork with you so you can work along the way.

·       Be flexible and willing to make sacrifices. You may have to cut down on some other thing you might like to do because of your school and work commitments.

·       If you have too much on your plate, admit it. Then cut back as needed.

·       Schedule relaxation. Everyone needs some down time to stay happy and healthy

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work Part 4

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work

Part 4

He reminds students that “the activates and courses students choose wary considerably, so it’s important for young people to keep their individual situation clearly in mind.” MacGowan continues, “for example, student’s actors should allow for the fact that they won’t have such time during performance sessions. Student athletes need to remember the times of the years of the year that they’ll be tried up with games and practice. Other students who are in classes that make considerable demands outside of the classrooms must keep that reality in mind.”

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work Part 3

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work

Part 3

Brad MacGowan, of the Career Center at Newton North High shoal in Massachusetts, thinks that working can be a valuable part of a student’s life. If taken on responsibility. “You can derive a great deal from working, considerably more than just money,” he says. “In most cases, you can acquire a nice doe of discipline and a whole new set of skills and experiences. “In addition, your supervisor may be willing to write a strong college recommendation for you.

School comes first

Schoolwork, including homework and studying for test, should always be your priority. MacGowan caution students who do decide to work, “if you are rushing through you assignment… or not studying enough for test because of work, it’s time to cut back or quit and fine a less time—consuming  job.”

Balancing High School ad Part-Time Work Part 2

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work

Part2

Voicing goals to someone else can help you make decisions and figure out your priorities. It can also help you judge whether you can do both—work together and study—successfully. To help answer this question, ask yourself:

·       Am I an organized person?

·       What kind of study habits do I have?

·       Do I make god use of my available time?

·       Will I be able to manage my schedule effectively if I take on a part-time job?

Think about the pros and cons of working. On the plus side, a job can teach you about commitment, time management and responsibility—and, of course, handling money. On the minus side, a job can cut into the time you have for sleeping, studying and socializing.

How to Take on College Studing part 1

How to take on college studying

Part 1

Develop good study habits.

In college, you’ll need to build on the study skills that you learned in high school. The demands of a college class are probably more rigorous than those you are used to.

Yu can succeed by knowing what to expect in college and how to handle it. Think of college as a full time job, in which you spend 40 hours a week on class, labs, study groups and doing homework.

Be organized and using your time well are essential. Learn more about time management, and use the guidelines below to develop your study skills.

Decide when to study

Work out about how many hours you need to study every day. Then make a schedule.

·        Figure out what blocks of time you have available through-out the day, in the evenings and on weekends.

·       Consider what time of day you are most alert – there are mornings people and night owls – and try to schedule you’re studying accordingly.

·        Think about whether you do better studying for a few hours at a time or sitting down for a marathon session.

Profile of a Successful Student part 2

Profile of a Successful Student

Part 2

Work together. There are a number of ways you can ensure you get the most out of your educational experience. First, participate fully. Engage regularly in the discussions and be willing to share your personal, professional and educational experience. You can get to know your classmates through the dialogue this is created in course environment--- sometimes even better than in face –to-face class. And the same goes to your instructor, be sure to contact you’re professor-especially if you are having problems. He/she is still your instructor and will be there to guide you and assist you as needed.

successful student 7-8

Successful student

7-8

7. . . . understand that actions affect learning. Successful students know their personal behavior affect their feelings and emotions which in turn can affect learning.

If you act in a certain way that normally produces particular feelings, you will begin to experience those feelings. Act like you’re bored, and you’ll become bored. Act like you’re disinterested, and you’ll become disinterested. So the next time you have trouble concentrating in the classroom, “act” like an interested person: lean forward, place your feet flat on the floor, maintain eye contact with the professor, nod occasionally, take notes and ask questions. Not only will you benefit directly from your actions, your classmates and professor may also get more excited and enthusiastic.

8. . . . talk about what their learning . Successful students get to know something well enough that they can put into words. Talking about something, with friends or classmates, is not only good for checking whether or not you know something, it’s a proven learning tool. Transferring ideas into words provides the most direct path for moving knowledge from short-term to long-term   memory. You really don’t “know” materials until you can put it into words. So, next time you study, don’t do it silently. Talks about notes, problems, reading, etc. with friends, recite to a chair, organize an oral study group, pretend your teaching your peers. “Talk-learning” producers a whole host of memory trace that result in more learning.

Study for Multiple Exam Part 2

Study for Multiple Exam

Part 2

My strategy for written assignments: Everyone has their own writing styles. I generally come up with an idea and do massive amounts of research before I ever think about writing. I then organize my research then sometimes prepare an outline before actually writing. I always print out the paper and come back to it the next day and read it. That is the easiest way for me to catch my own mistakes. I have to give my eyes a break from it, and if I just wrote it I think it looks perfect. But if I look at it a day later I almost always find errors for phrases and sentences I just want to reward.

How I succeed in team projects: Never assume someone is doing what they are supposed to be doing. Have regular meetings and have each member show their work, not just give you or the group their word for it.

Work Together Part 2

Work together

Part 2

English, math, foreign language: For math, all I can say is to do the problems assigned. It is the only way to practice and that’s really all it is for math. It’s the same for chemistry; if you do the practice problems you will understand the material so much better because those subjects are not just memorization like history, you need to be able to apply what you have learned in practical situations. As for English, I am no longer taking it, but I would say to leave yourself plenty of time to write essays and papers. They take time to get all the information out of your head and into the page, so don’t leave them until the last second.

Work Together Part 1

Work together

Part 1

I can and will work as part of a team as long as everyone in the team is willing to do his work. I don’t like having to pick up the slack, but I will if I know that my grade will be harmed otherwise. My greatest academic success was in my first semester when I had to write a 10-12 page research paper. It was the longest paper I have ever been assigned and I was a little scared. Also, it was the first paper where they were like, here you go, just write about something. I had to argue in favor of or agents something, but it could be anything from the sky is blue to hypnotism. I wrote mine on hypnotism. I worked on this paper for weeks and weeks. Every night I would be doing research or writing. I put so much effort into this paper. It ended up being just under 12 pages but it was full on information. I turned it in and when I got it back a week or so later, I had received the first A+ of my college career. All my hard work paid off because I got the grade I deserved. I was really proud and happy for myself.
